Overview

Fin du XIVe siècle, Bavière Johannes Schiltberger, âgé de 15 ans, devient l'écuyer d'un comte. Celui-ci décide de participer à la guerre contre l'Empire ottoman, voulue par le roi de Hongrie, mais les armées chrétiennes sont défaites par les Ottomans lors de la bataille de Nicopolis en 1396. Schiltberger est fait prisonnier et doit accepter de devenir fantassin au sein de l'armée victorieuse. Il participe à diverses batailles mais lorsque les Ottomans font face aux troupes turco-mongoles de Tamerlan, ce sont ces dernières qui l'emportent.
À nouveau captif, il doit désormais combattre à leurs côtés. Après différentes péripéties, parviendra-t-il à regagner son pays natal, plus de 30 années après son départ ?
